I tried a 2.6.18.1 kernel, but I couldn't get it to compile due to what
appeared to be issues with KLIPS (again using gcc 4.1.0). I did some
looking and it looked like there were some known issues with 2.6 & KLIPS.
Btw, is there a way to compile the UML environment without KLIPS support?

Paul> ~> gcc --version gcc (GCC) 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13)
but, if your kernel is newer, then gcc4 should work for the #public tree.
