I manually killed the pptp process which seems to have started
intercepting my connections for some reason so I wasn't getting
the ipsec negotiation in the auth.log

Now I see

DeviceName.....WAN miniport (L2TP)
Server IP add  192.168.0.55

The ping behaviour is still the same.
