Use WINS... pick a central WINS server (usually your SMB/Windows PDC) 
and point all clients there for WINS resolution - makes things work 
alot better/faster/easier.

But it does sound like you are trying to do Domain Authentication 
against a DC on the 10.x network, since it doesn't know any better.
