On uniprocessors, there is essentially no work needed to make it work.
It is "just software"
At one point, some people wanted to be able to "dedicate" (via kernel
thread) one or more processors to doing the crypto. i.e. in a quad xeon,
if one binds one NIC card to a processor, then there wasn't much for the
other two to do.
I wonder if there is still interest in this.
