What do you mean, a strange subnet? With L2TP/IPsec the client gets
assigned an IP address from the internal subnet. It's an point-to-point
connection to l2tpd's 'local ip'. So 255.255.255.255 would be as expected
for a P-t-P connection.

You should be able to access the internal network if the proxy-arp is
in place and IP forwarding is enabled.
