Thanks for that, freeswan 2.04 with kernel 2.6.3. is a pain.....

Sure, as soon as I have tried openswan with 2.6 on Debian, I will tell 
you how it went. For freeswan problems, you could look at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=src&data=freeswan&archive=no
There are quite a few bugs concerning the native IPSec stack with short 
descriptions of the errors.
