Sorry, I forgot to mention that I used CentOS with an Openswan 2.6.24 RPM
because indeed there were xl2tpd problems on Ubuntu (& Debian?).

IIRC, I even tried the Openswan RPM on Ubuntu using alien but still  
encountered
the same problem. So I guess it must be something in Ubuntu's kernel or
network settings or so.
