Thanks.  I changed that, restarted OpenSwan, and I get the same error message when I try to connect.  I also simplified the line to:

virtual_private==%v4:192.168.248.0/24

...but it still threw the same error message.

THEN, I thought...if he made one typo, maybe he made another one too, so I removed the second "=".

You guessed it...it works great now.  :^)
