Is this an old version of openswan. A similar looking bug was fixed before.

If it's recent, then enable dumpdir=/tmp in 'config setup' of ipsec.conf and trigger
the problem again, then run gdb on the openswan-2.*/OBJ*/programs/pluto/pluto binary
with the core in /tmp and provide a backtrace.
