The main reason was the target distribution (Bering-uClibc) and it's lack of
RPC support.
Recent releases of Openl2TP dropped this requirement though.
Also, more clients means more testing of the kernel code and that may speed
up mainline adoption (I will also work on (k)rp-l2tp).
