To reply to my own post :)

With the patch found on
http://www.lanarchitect.net/Articles/FixSP2VPN/FixSP2VPN.vbs I have a
working connection under Windows XP too!

So, the setup posted in my initial message works now with Win XP (all
updates, SP4, above patch) and Win 2000 (professional, all updates, SP4)
with L2TP client and no further modifications on the server.
