[Openswan Users] Connecting Linux workstation to CheckPoint VPN-1 using shared secret

Hi All, 

I am trying to connect my home workstation (running Linux) to a CheckPoint VPN-1
using shared secrets (basically a username and password) as an authentication
method. 

So far I’ve been unsuccessful with CheckPoint refereeing all Linux users to
FreeS/WAN, coincidentally FreeS/WAN is not under development any more and the
instructions they provided are almost useless. 

If anyone managed to connect their Linux workstation to a CheckPoint VPN-1
server via Openswan, using username and password (shared secret) as an
authentication method I would really appreciate any details you could provide on
how you have achieved that.
