Hi, Jacco,
I agree that the best solution is plain IPSec, but the problem is the
firewall rules I need, once there is no ipsecx interface. :-(
How could I use the _updown script to overcome this issue?

There is no integrated L2TP/IPsec client but you could try
Openswan in combination with l2tpd:

I have not tried this myself because I recommend convincing
the system admin that you need plain IPsec without L2TP.
