I too had:

gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -U__i386__ -Ui386 -DUM_FASTCALL -g -D__arch_um__ -DSUBARCH=\"i386\" -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -I/mara3/e-dtu/fs1/plain/arch/um/include -I/mara3/e-dtu/fs1/plain/arch/um/kernel/tt/include -I/mara3/e-dtu/fs1/plain/arch/um/kernel/skas/include -D_GNU_SOURCE -c -o proxy.o proxy.c
proxy.c:296:1: missing terminating " character
proxy.c:297: error: parse error before "b"

And I think that this is

marajade-[/mara3/e-dtu/fs1/plain] mcr 1092 %gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.3.4 (Debian 1:3.3.4-6sarge1)

refusal to permit multiline string constants.
