[Openswan Users] Multiple IPSEC clients

In Ipsec.conf I have to specify a client IP address for "right=" eg:
right=192.168.1.3

if I use:

right=any

the connection doesn't establish.

any theory as to why. has anyone come across this before?
is right=any the correct syntax? I've seen it used in MANY example configs
I need around 50 clients so one "conn" would be better than having 50 
different "conn"'s for each user.
