Looking inside the directory I see:

CONFIG_XFRM_USER=y

which tells me it's compiled in, which in turn tells me in theory the 
kernel should have no problem with freeswan.

(This saves me having to change out the kernel on a machine on the 
opposite side of the planet... yay!)
