We've come up with a name for the "native 2.6 IPsec". It is very confusing
referring to it at times.

We propose to call it "26sec".

If you want to do NAT before a tunnel, then you'll have to use KLIPS.
It does not build on 2.6, but it will soon.

As for openswan on a debian box - the userland should just compile.
