There is some additional issues with using "ip".

Specifically, pluto uses the BSD API method of enumerating the
interfaces. Aliases created with "ip" are not visible, and sometimes
entire interfaces. 

So, until pluto is updated to use netlink to find the list of
interfaces, it may cause confusion to mix things up.

(why the BSD interface was not a wrapper around the new method, I have
NEVER KNOWN. NIH syndrome, I think)
