- Use openswan-2.1.5 or later.
- see openswan-2/doc/src/crosscompile.html
- Don't put crosscompile directives in USERCOMPILE=
- Check Makefile.inc to override some settings you might not want for
   embedded systems, and to change default isntall paths.

By writing a small shell script that sets environment variables, you
should be able to get a full compile going without changing a single
line of code.

If you are using a linksys based mips box, you can also just install
the openwrt openswan ikpg package :)
